April 2011 Two teachers from the After-School All-Stars program have been chosen by Atlanta Public Schools as recipients of the "Teacher Of The Year" awards. Read more These teachers were none other than Mr. Vernon Smart from the B.E.S.T. Academy and Bernard Webb from Coan Middle School. Vernon Smart Mr. Vernon Smart was born on July 6th, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, to Mr. and Mrs. Alvin and Rosa Lee Smart, and he has one sibling, Anthony, who is his younger brother. He matriculated through school in the East Baton Rouge Parish public school system graduating from McKinley Senior High School in 1984. After receiving his diploma, he furthered his education by attending Southern University in Baton Rouge where he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics. While at Southern University, he became a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Incorporated in the spring of 1988. Also while attending Southern University, Vernon met his wife, Leslie, and they were married on December 21, 1991. They have a seven year old daughter, Autumn. In 1992, Vernon began his career in Education by obtaining a position as an academic coordinator at Baton Rouge Marine Institute where he served for four years. Then, in 1996, Vernon transitioned to Rosenwald Elementary School where he served as the time-out moderator for two years. After that experience, he became a 9th grade Algebra I teacher at Capitol Senior High School and remained there for nine years until 2007. In the summer of 2007, Vernon relocated from Baton Rouge to Atlanta, Georgia, to work at the B.E.S.T. Academy Middle School, an all-boys single gender school, where he served as the mathematics instructional coach for two years. He presently works at the B.E.S.T. Academy where he has also served as the After-School All-Stars program coordinator, Sixth Grade Team Leader, and Saturday School mathematics teacher. He has won numerous accolades including Teacher of the Month for October 2010 and January 2011 and most recently, Teacher of the Year for 2010 - 2011 school year. Furthermore, in 2010, Mr. Smart obtained his Master of Science degree in Educational Leadership from the Graduate Update description
